How does Shiatsu work?

Qi (also spelled Chi or Ki) is our life force, or vital energy, according to the Oriental approach, which includes traditional medicine and internal martial arts. A balanced flow of Qi is essential to support the harmonious functioning of all our life processes. There are many factors that affect the flow of Qi in the body. Frequently, this is from physical blockages, for example muscular tension, injuries and poor posture, or emotional blockages that affect more or less visibly how the body is organised.

Qi flows in the meridians, or energy channels in the body. Our understanding of these energetic pathways is continously evolving. The meridian system is thought to be pathways within the layers of connective tissue of the body, the fascia. Meridian points, or acupuncture points, are often located near or on joints in the body (such as the elbow, knee etc), often described as 'energy gates'.

Re-balancing the overall energy, by stimulating, moving or calming and clearing the Qi, can improve emotional and mental wellbeing, as well as physical problems. The Shiatsu practitioner creates change in the flow of energy by working directly on the meridians and acu-points and by tuning in to the overall energy field of the client. In this way, Shiatsu supports the innate capacity of the body to self-regulate towards healthier functioning.

What happens in a Shiatsu session?

The start of the session is an opportunity for us both to ask questions. I will aim to understand the nature and history of your specific health issues and what you want to get out of the session. Even when no particular health concerns are present, it is useful to take a pause and ask yourself what brings you to have a shiatsu treatment.  You can ask to know more about how I work and what to expect from the session.

The massage or 'bodywork' part of the session is where you lie down on a futon (mattress) or massage couch, or sit comfortably (if lying down is not possible), and receive shiatsu. Unlike most types of massage, you receive shiatsu fully clothed, preferably with loose, warm comfortable clothing. I will use a combination of finger pressure, stretches and other techniques. This usually feels pleasurable and comforting. Sometimes it is necessary to work more deeply and this can be somewhat uncomfortable, but this is only a small part of the overall treatment. I will respond to your feedback and adapt my work accordingly. The most important thing is that you remain relaxed throughout.

At the end of the session you may feel the need to talk about what you experienced and how you are feeling now, so there is some time to do that. It is an opportunity to notice what it is like and what has changed for you, by paying attention to your thoughts, images or sensations. The treatment can bring up feelings, surprising insights about your health, and often about your life more generally.

How many sessions will I need?

If you want to give yourself a relaxing treat, one shiatsu treatment may be all you need!

Regular sessions (forthnightly or monthly) are beneficial if you want to use shiatsu to rebalance yourself in periods of stress, or to maintain your wellbeing. If you have health challenges, the number of sessions will depend on many factors, such as how long you have been experiencing the symptoms and your overall lifestyle. Change can be rapid or slow. Everyone is different!
